Haunting Images-Bodies of Italy's 'incorruptible' preserved saints displayed for worshippers

Haunting new images capture the 'incorruptible' bodies of saints whose remains are displayed around Italy for the faithful to worship.

While some are mere fragmented bones, other corpses appear staggeringly well-preserved despite dying hundreds of years ago.The saints supposedly belong to the world of the incorrupt - a Roman Catholic belief that Divine Intervention allows some humans to avoid decomposition after death as a sign of their holiness.

Incorruptible bodies are often said to have the odour of sanctity, exuding a sweet or floral, pleasant aroma.

To qualify as incorruptible, traditional belief dictates that the body should not have been embalmed or mummified to achieve preservation but should remain in tact naturally.

Despite this, many of the saints have been preserved through other trickery since being taken from their original resting places - and many are encased in wax, silver or bathed in carbolic acid.

St Victoria, a fragmented skeleton, was hauled out of the Roman catacombs at the mere suggestion she might be a martyr.

She would not have recognised her name, story, and even clothes she was dressed in as they were pieced together or invented entirely by the Church.

Then there is Francesca Romana, who is little more than a skeleton dressed in a nun’s habit. Francesca was deemed incorrupt a few months after her death in 1440.

When her tomb was reopened two centuries later, she was nothing but bone.

The incorrupt body of St Pope Pius V, who died in 1572,
The 'incorrupt' St Camillus de Lellis.
The incorrupt but now skeletal body of St Francesca Romana, also called Santa Maria Nova. Francesca was deemed incorrupt a few months after her death in 1440

    1. i pity you blessed be God indeed. i was/was a catholic but there a lot of teachings and things that dont add up. Even Jesus told Mary that he now has a new body after resurrection. So does the catholic church need the preserved tongues for( preserved naturally or not). Even if you are alive in the second coming, bible says you will be transformed. so biko, tell me wetin una de use those body for. miracles right? like father tansi in enugu.

    2. @anon 15:58, i get ur point where u said the bible says u wil be transformed etc and why do dey preserve the body.
dear, if these bodies were not preserved and showcased wud u have believed such existed even if u were told?, sometimes somethings needs to be physically proven for people to get the point.

  9. @ Ella.. Don't think there was need to dish out insults on brown sugar and the anon above.. We all have different orientation and doctrines as well. So many people will see this as not being normal, while some will go with it.. For example you may feel Olumba Olumba worshippers are nuts by going bare footed on the road, but then they have their own belief and doctrine too..!!!!

    2. Yes you are right and I can understand how angry you are about plasphemy. I am catholic too. But believe me without the insult you could teach them a thing or two they don't know about. By so doing that, the person will now down his or her head knowing its wrong and take correction...God bless us all.!!

  12. When it comes to church I think it's best we respect each other's doctrines because it's disrespectful to challenge or insult what another person belivs in, u can make people c reason if u don't agree with something.. But insulting wot anoda person believes in is jus plain Rude...
As for these saints issue, it's something that has been there and growing up as a catholic, we were taught all these in Catechism,
Pls n pls it's a tradition, u either agree wit us or agree to disagree but don't blaspheme.. Cos it's even a sin...
