I was shocked by the trenchant reaction to my piece on the July 15 attempted coup in Turkey from at least two persons. The piece titled “Nigerians and the Failed Coup in Turkey” (The Guardian, Sunday, July 17) had fetched a mail and direct messages from a concerned Nigerian who objected to my description of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a bad guy- an intolerant, arrogant, temperamental dictator who after July 15 could become even more authoritarian.

The fellow praised Erdogan and spoke glowingly about how well the Turkish economy has fared under his watch. I also got a list of current economic indicators on Turkey sent to me.

The corpse of a 28-year-old pregnant woman, Justina Joshua, which was left to rot in the mortuary of the General Hospital in Idanre, Ondo State due to a clash of cultures, has been mutilated while laying on the floor of the mortuary.

According to a previous report by PUNCH , Justina, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, died moments after she was knocked down by a tree while on the farm to pluck corn in the company of her six-year-old nephew.

Justina, who had three children with her husband, Sunday, made it to a clinic but when she was being transferred to the general hospital for better care, she died at the gate of the hospital, ostensibly due to the complications she suffered from the incident, having been trapped under the tree for hours.

A man identified as Jacob Nwachukwu has reportedly cut off his wife’s left hand over an allegation of infidelity at Abala in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

It was gathered that the victim, Nwadiokeonu Nwachukwu, is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital in Aba, while her severed hand had been taken to her husband’s village at Abala for burial.

A female co-tenant of Mrs. Nwachukwu, who pleaded anonymity, told Southern City News that the couple had lived in the city for years before the husband lost his job and had to relocate to the village, leaving his wife, a trader, in the city.

A diner at a restaurant in China forced the establishment's owner to eat a cockroach after he found the insect in his food.

The man ordered a plate of fried noodles from the restaurant on July 25 in Changsha, Hunan province, and claimed he discovered the insect in his meal.
According to People's Daily Online, at that point, the customer gave the restaurant owner an ultimatum, either they eat the cockroach or cough up 5,000 yuan (£569).

The shopkeeper, instantly eat the cockroach and refused to cough up the cash.

On Wednesday,July 28th,actress Toyin Aimaku recorded a video with Ovarian cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed,pleading with Nigerians to donate money for her to be flown abroad for urgent treatment.The money needed was 100,000 dollars.. After her videos went viral, the money was raised in two days.Fast forward to Thursday, Toyin raised alarm that it was all a scam as Mayowa's case was beyond treatment .

She also said the family suddenly wanted to cut everyone off after the money was raised .The police was involved and the account was frozen as investigations continue.Meanwhile, the family accused Toyin of demanding for part of the money and requesting they foot her bills to fly abroad with Mayowa, and said their refusal was what allegedly enraged her ..

A young man in India who was presumed to have died after being bitten by a snake rose up from the funeral pyre at the moment it was set on fire.
The 23-year-old man, named as Sandeep, was attacked while collecting wood from the forest.
When he arrived back in his village in the Raisen district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, he told his family about the snake bite.
Instead of taking Sandeep to a hospital, they brought him to a traditional tantric practitioner in a nearby village, Daily Mirrror reports..
But the tantric’s treatment proved ineffective and it was assumed the young man had passed away.

The police in Enugu on Friday arraigned a seven-year-old boy, Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, before a magistrate court, for alleged murder.

Infants who breastfeed are smarter, faster and stronger, according to a new study.

The research found babies brought up on formula milk performed worse in mathematics, memory, IQ, and motor function tests at the age of seven compared to their breast-fed peers.They also had a smaller volume of grey matter in their brains, an area important for processing and transmitting neural signals to other parts of the brain.
