New York Times Slams President Jonathan over Election Postponment

The New York Times has slammed president Jonathan in a new article, accusing him of postponing the elections to frustrate Buhari .The article titled Nigeria’s Miserable Choices reads
The Nigerian government was supposed to hold presidential elections this past weekend, which presented voters with the dispiriting choice of keeping a lousy incumbent or returning to power a former autocratic leader. Now they will have to wait at least six weeks to cast votes.
Any argument to delay the vote might be more credible if President Goodluck Jonathan’s government had not spent much of the past year playing down the threat posed by the militants and if there were a reasonable expectation that the country’s weak military has the ability to improve security in a matter of weeks.

It appears more likely Mr. Jonathan grew alarmed by the surging appeal of Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler who has vowed to crack down on Boko Haram. By dragging out the race, Mr. Jonathan stands to deplete his rival’s campaign coffers, while he continues to use state funds and institutions to bankroll his own.
That Mr. Buhari, who helped launch a coup against a democratically elected government in 1983 and ruled until late 1985, has emerged as potential winner is more of an indictment of Mr. Jonathan’s dismal rule than a recognition of the former military chief’s appeal.

Nigerian voters have grown increasingly worried about the stunning rise of Boko Haram, which has committed terrorist atrocities including bombings.
The abductions and attacks by the group have exposed the weaknesses of Nigeria’s armed forces and the dysfunction of the government.
Although Mr. Jonathan’s government has in the past been less than enthusiastic, and at times obstructive, in response to offers of American and European aid, he appears to be growing increasingly worried. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal last week, he said he would welcome American troops to fight the insurgency.

Beyond security matters, entrenched corruption and the government’s inability to diversify its economy as the price of oil, the country’s financial bedrock, has fallen have also caused Nigerians to look for new leadership. Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, and a relatively young democracy, cannot afford an electoral crisis

. That would only set back the faltering effort to reassert government control in districts where Boko Haram is sowing terror. The security forces may not be able to safeguard many districts on Election Day. But postponement is very likely to make the security threat worse.

  5. They can slam from now till next year. An incumbent president still has the edge over the incoming, the signs were they and hence the postponement for safe landing. Buhari can never rule Nigeria, I repeat, can never rule Nigeria, yes Nigeria needs that change but Buhari is not an option. Let GEJ complete his tenure then to your tents oh Isreal.... GEJ 2015...!!!!!

    2. I think everyone has to be rational here....vote the right person for the job, personally i really do not care what party they come from- question is will our kids be happy 5 years down with the decision we have made. GEJ did not spoil the country granted but it certainly got worse under his watch. Now i have not said I am voting for Buhari, I just need us to be rational and stop letting these people take advantage of us by rubbing in boko haram, religious views and all that. No one is a saint so let's leave GEJ's past and Buhari's past aside and do the right thing. I believe that when 75% of Nigerians begin to think like this there will be light at the end of the tunnel for us.

    3. You should also remember that buhari had said he would burned Nigeria if he didn't win. After he lost, bokoharam started killing people for him. They even name him as one of their negotiator. But,out of guilty,he turned down their request.

    4. All I know is that as God Is alive, his counsel must stand and buhari will not even rule Nigeria in anyway. Who died and made America a status quo to have an opinion about our country. As far as I'm concerned, buhari is a sell out and the God that refused him power in all the races will see to it that that power he is after will not get to him. Obasanjo is a fool for antagonizing a sitting president, his president because I can remember idris's jagajaga and what his response was. See tinubu as a strong backbone for buhari over corrupt idiot that has refused to go under the radar. What did he do for Lagos during his tenure as governor. Well, I have no doubt Jonathan will emerge the winner again and I'm glad all these wolves in sheep clothing are defecting out of pdp. if God gives him the mantle again as he will, he better use this last opportunity well and not act weak. He should surround himself with worthy people and not dumb himself down for past rulers. He better nip all of them in the bud. GEJ 2015

    5. Shallow minds like yours is one of the reasons why Nigeria is where it is today. GEJ should continue his tenure inspite of his failed government. Buhari is not he option because your people say so right? Well you shall chew your words come MARCH 28. Mark my words. If its the barely 500,000 legible electorates in Bayelsa that would secure his second term. we are waiting to see. CHANGE we preach and change we would have.

    6. @Sunnyotun rumor peddlers with myopic minds like you are a huge disgrace to your family. I am very certain that you are hustling. Have you ever sat down to wonder why. Well I ll tell you. You are blinded and deafened by ignorance and sentiments that you cannot see beyond your nose. If the allegation that Buhari is behind Boko Haram is credible why has there not been any proof to tie him to these ungodly miscreants. Rather the opposite is the case. The President has been seen to associate and protect people who are known sponsors of Boko Haram. I feel sorry for alot of we the youth because its obvious we are not ready to be the future leaders with the way we think.

  8. How many people have still gotten their pvc 's? How ready was inec? What has Gej to gain in "postponing " the election? Everyone just quick to blame Goodluck for everything. Na wa o

    1. States occupy by apc are the ones frustrating eligible voters from collecting their pvc's.Just as inec said those who haven't collected their pvc should go to lga and wards,if you go to those council as a neutral person they will tell you it's not ready,Meanwhile, they give the pvc card to carrying members of apc through the back door. That is why they register members of their party. When I went for my pvc the inec staff was reluctant to give me my pvc, telling me my name was not on the sheet.I insisted that we should check it together. After the third search,my name was found. This is a party who claim to be corrupt free.Hypocrites.

    2. Some of you may want to ask me how did they know who is apc and pdp.You remember the last apc registration the conducted for members and the slip they were given.that is how the identify members. Also, they have stalwarts who help the party to gather voters, mostly older women and jobless secondary school students and leavers.I witness it myself. So there is no political parties that doesn't rig election.

  10. We need change in Nigeria n in every sectors,so I would rather vote 4 change.

  11. Everybody wants change, everybody wants to vote for change when the change is right there but they fail to see it, the change is Jonathan. Tell me if obasanjo the fool or even buhari the puppet or any other past leader will stand and take all the insults Jonathan has taken. Jonathan is exactly what democracy is. Buhari is just a washed out tyrant he has nothing good to offer and yes, he is the brain behind Boko haram. Why is it that they are most active before any electoral race he participates in and why are they most active for every race he loses. Biko haram is him, babangida and their cohorts idea but has grown larger than them. Buhari in power will set Nigeria Back 30 years.

  14. I am always delighted reading Nigerians sharing their different views about Nigeria and the way forward but when some shameless individuals from Sodom and Gormorah, where men marry men and women marry women and believe that is modern life style, start intruding with their know it all syndrome mentality. I can but wonder who really are these people. I don't think that they are normal people by any standard. Some of them had just woken up this morning after sleeping with their dogs at night. What a life? Nigerians are more decent people if only you guys out there in US can take a long good look at their life every morning in the mirror. IT IS WELL

  15. The key word is GEJ using state resource to fund his campaign while opposition is running dry. It's unfortunate they describe it as a miserable choice. Jonathan has made a dictator likeable. The effect of grand failure!!!
