  6. I want to conclude my ankara write up. If you missed it, it featured in the nadia buari post.
I had asked the question as to the origins of the ankara in the first part of this my ankara write up. Im so sure many of you wore fabulous ankara designs to church today. Have you ever wondered how ankara was created. I strongly believe ankara was started in west africa. I mentioned in the first write up about cotton. There is no cotton without ankara. This is cause the cotton makes it easier to print on. Cotton is absorbs dyes easily and cotton can take on any shape, cotton was also readily available in west africa. But im not here, to talk bout cotton. I just wanted you to understand the role of cotton in ankara fabrication.
The very first type ankara was the adire. Also known as tye n dye. I mentioned in my first write up that ankara is basically cotton cloth that is coloured and is designed with motifs. Adire is hand crafted cotton cloth that has been colour dyed and has motif. See the similarities between ankara and adire? The women of west africa hundreds and hundreds of years ago created beautiful adire pieces. These pieces were based on the women's experience of a beautiful natural africa. They used stencils from the bones of animals, shells or even plants to create wonderful designs unto their hand spun cotton fabric. Basically any natural item that could put a lovely motif on their adire. They also used dye to colour the fabric. They made used of the indigo plant which gives the cloth a blueish colour. That was how the women of west africa created the most beautiful of cloth. They were inspired by mother nature, by a beautiful africa landscape. By also beautiful wildlife and colourful tropical freshwater fishes. They had so much colour and beauty around them that its no wonder they were motivated to recreate nature's beauty unto their adire fabrics. What im saying in essence is that the natural beauty of africa gave birth to the adire which inspired the ankara.
Adire was not the only fabric that the women of west africa made. They also created batik fabrics a hand printed form of adire so to speak. Batik was also inspired by the natural beauty of africa. Batiks are hand painted fabrics made using beeswax, feathers and natural resit dye. The feathers were used to design hand drawn motifs unto the cloth. They also used palm fronds to draw. They drew forms of animals and plants on the batiks. The parts that are waxed retain their original colour and were not affected by the dyeing of the cloth. Batik and adire are similar only that batik uses wax and it isnt tied like adire. These techniques created the most beautiful designs thanks to the early west africans. Batik designs were also as a result of the beautiful mother nature around the west african women. They got their inspiration from nature. But its interesting to know that in far away java, in indonesia, people were also making similar batik cloths using similar processes just like the west africans. This is to say batik was not only an african thing but also asian. Batik designs are very popular in indonesia. The president of indonesia is always in the most eye catching batik shirts. Nelson mandela also wears batik designs. Mandela's batik shirts are hand painted. Thats just simply exquisite.
entered into west africa after the uninvited entry of the europeans into africa a.k.a colonialism. You see one of the white people to explore africa were the dutch. The people of holland. The dutch colonised the southern parts of the african continent. Namely mauritius and parts of the republic of south africa. The dutch had also been in indonesia as a result of colonialism. Where they came across the local indonesians making batik in the same way the west africans made theirs. The smart dutch learnt the batik making process from the indonesians. To be continued, the final part.
