Ebola: Patrick Sawyer's final hours in Lagos.."How he denied carrying the virus"

The death of Liberian Ebola victim, Patrick Sawyer in a Lagos hospital, has opened up a floodgate of Ebola cases as it's been revealed he came in contact with about 70 people directly or indirectly. One of the Nigerian nurses who attended him died on Tuesday and others are still in isolation .Yesterday, the minister of Health said he was aware he had the virus before embarking on his journey to Nigeria and some have claimed it was 'an intentional act of biological warfare'.

A new and extensive report by Front Page Africa chronicles his last hours in Lagos. Read below

"Barely 24 hours before his death, Patrick Sawyer had a rather strange - and in the words of medical and diplomatic sources here, “Indiscipline” encounter with nurses and health workers at First Consultants Hospital in Obalende, one of the most crowded parts of Lagos, a population of some 21 million inhabitants.
Looking to get to the bottom of Sawyer’s strange ailment on the Asky Airline flight, which Sawyer transferred on in Togo, hospital officials say, he was tested for both malaria and HIV AIDS. However, when both tests came back negative, he was then asked whether he had made contact with any person with the Ebola Virus, to which Sawyer denied. Sawyer’s sister, Princess had died of the deadly virus on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia. On Friday, July 25, 2014, 18 days later, Sawyer died in Lagos.
"Upon being told he had Ebola, Mr. Sawyer went into a rage, denying and objecting to the opinion of the medical experts
“He was so adamant and difficult that he took the tubes from his body and took off his pants and urinated on the health workers, forcing them to flee."The hospital would later report that it resisted immense pressure to let out Sawyer from its hospital against the insistence from some higher-ups and conference organizers that he had a key role to play at the ECOWAS convention in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
In fact, FrontPageAfrica has been informed that officials in Monrovia were in negotiations with ECOWAS to have Sawyer flown back to Liberia.
A text message in possession of FrontPageAfrica from the ECOWAS Ambassador in Liberia, responding to a senior GoL official reads: Your Excellency, the disease control department of the Federal Ministry of Health just contacted me through the hospital now, insisting that Mr. Sawyer be evacuated for now. Pls advise urgently.”
In the aftermath of Sawyer’s death, diplomatic, ECOWAS and medical authorities here are baffled over Sawyer’s deception, especially armed with new information that his sister, Princess had died of the deadly virus and his denial. Finance Ministry sources in Monrovia are in quiet murmur over what they feel was a letdown by Sawyer for not being forthcoming with his peers he worked with.
The ministry has since been temporarily shut down and those who came in contact with Sawyer are on a 21-day forced incubation monitoring process. "All senior officials coming in direct or indirect contact with Mr. Sawyer has been placed on the prescribed 21 days of observatory surveillance," the ministry said in a statement this week.
FrontPageAfrica has now learnt that Sawyer exhibited similar indiscipline behavior during his sister’s stay at the Catholic Hospital in Monrovia where she was taken because he noticed she was bleeding profusely and was later found to be a victim of Ebola.
Sawyer was seen with blood on his clothing after his sister’s death and had earlier demanded that she be placed in a private room.
President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf cited indiscipline and disrespect as a key reason why Sawyer contracted the Ebola virus. She said his failure to heed medical advice put the lives of other residents across the nation’s border at risk.

  1. Why was he allowed to travel out of Liberia knowing that there was a possibility that he was a carrier of the virus? why?

  23. I blame the greedy Yoruba men and women working at the Murital Mohammed Airport in Lagos for allowing him to proceed to the Hospital to spread this venom.Am sure they as usual had collected enough money from the ''big foreign oga '' to allow him to go for special malaria treatment in a private hospital owned by another Yoruba Doctor who they jealously recommended so that ebgoo mi doctor can also collect egunje. Iam sure the driver was a Yoruba driver too and he must have teased and ''obtained'' the oga while on transit to the hospital. Now everyone eyes has opened. The corruption at the MM Int/l Airport is just so much that a first time visitor will need not a magnifier to see it. From demanding for tips at the Immigration point to facilitate simple checks on passport to selling of trolleys. And when you eventually go out of the airport after the last Immigration ''luggage-turned -pocket check'' you are greeted by sea of area boys, touts drivers who literally would swallow you up with demands to give you a car lift to your final destination. May God help us in Nigeria!!

  24. May this evil brought unto our country by this bastard called "Patrick Sawyer" go back to his family, especially his loud mouth widow in New York. This evil man purposely came to our country to infect people. Not only that he urinated on doctors and nurses, he even spitted his deadly saliva on people attending him. Liberia must be blamed for allowing this evil, even Togo where he transited to Nigeria and finally our lazy immigration. They could not stop the bastard. Why? Why? I just hope his useless corpse is burnt with fuel and acid in a well dug grave. Patrick Sawyer is already in hell fire for the evil he brought into our country. His useless widow who is running her mouth in New York saying the evil Patrick knew he had EVD but was seeking to go to a place with better medical facility did not advise her evil husband to travel to US, his adopted country. Of course, they know US wouldn't have allowed him into the country but a corrupt-ridden country Nigeria easily allowed him after he probably threw few "egunge" to our useless peoiple at the airport. Sawyer family, you people have failed because with God we Nigerians will come out this in Jesus name. Amen!
