Meet the Nigerian man who has threatened to commit suicide on Valentine's day

A 57-year old man, Denis Amayo, has threatened to commit suicide on Valentine’s Day (14 February) should Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State fail to pay his eight-month pension arrears.

Amayo who addressed journalists in Benin this morning, said he served the state meritoriously for35 years in the Ministry of Agriculture and retired in August last year.

A document he tendered showed that he joined the then Bendel State Ministry of Agriculture on July 7, 1978 and retired as a field overseer last year.

He said the death of his father whose corpse is in the mortuary, necessitated his demand for the payment of his pension arrears.

“I am my father’s first born. It will be immoral of me to task my younger ones to bring money for his bur
ial while I cannot bring anything for the burial,” he stated.

In his hand-written petition to Governor Oshiomhole, the Igbanke-born father of four said the state was owing him “eight months pension arrears,” adding “please sir, pay me before February 14, 2014. I lost my father, otherwise, I will commit suicide.”

He warned that should the governor failed to pay him, he will sacrifice his life to raise awareness for other pensioners owed several months of unpaid pensions.

    4. Don't be ignorant. This is a serious issue. How can the Nigerian government fail to pay their workers and pensioners? Won't they eat? It is not fair at all. Do not laugh at him. You have no idea what he has gone through to reach this desperate point.

  9. He isn't a fool..if this man kills himself cos of a mere pension money it will strike a blow to the government and the whole world will see how cruel nigeria govt is...it is just dishearten to hear this cos it isn't easy to work for such a long time without being paid and he is very old now so you don't expect him to start working at his old age...#sad....most of you here wishing him rip are just naïve kids..when you get to his age and start working without getting paid and you have to take care of your children and family that's when you will know what he is going through right now

    1. Finally, a sensible comment. Thank you jare, leave all these myopic babies to keep displaying their foolishness. Most of our aged parents took loans just to see their children thru school, so the issue of saving for the rainy day from their meager salaries has always been out of question. Its such a shame that the so many ppl have even died on queue while waiting for a pension that actually was not intended to be paid. The Nigeria Pension Scheme is in total shambles right now. My advice to the young folks today is to focus on sharpening any of ur skills that U know can be an added advantage to the paid job U have. There is no Job securities anywhere anymore oh. May God help us all.

  10. Noone is saying what they are doing is bad, but using suicide as a threat is not the right way to go? So when you die what will change? Does he know how many thousands die in the is country each day and noone cares. Where there is life, there is hope
