BlackBerry digging its own grave? Plans to move BBM chat to Android & iOS

I'm not a tech person but I know the difference between an Android phone and a blackberry. Lol. Blackberry recently announced that they want to make the most peculiar feature on Blackberry (the BBM instant messenger) available for the first time to those who use iOS® and Android™ .(subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store).

Now we know the competition is huge as everyday brands are coming out with the latest mind-blowing technology you can find in phones.
This means, those who have Samsung or Iphones can now use the BB messenger..

The question on everyone's lips is...would this bring Blackberry down or elevate them? Or is the addiction to Blackberry so strong that original BB users wont migrate....

In simple terms..would you still buy a blackberry if you know you can still have the BB chat on Android or your Iphone?..I know my answer but want to hear yours first..

  2. It's the only way to save them from extinction. Atleast if their BlackBerry phones don't sell, their BBM chat lives on

  5. If they can do something about their batteries the way they keep pushing out new phones, they can stand the heat. But android phones are stepping up big time

  6. I think it's more about the feel of using a bb. Trust me,having the chat thing on an Android or iOS won't have the same feel. I'm a BB die hard fan, anyother phone comes 2nd

  12. Well Emeh, this topic has been a subject of intense debate among so many people. But I feel for BB to make BBM a third-party application on Google Play and iOS, there must be something they will gain. Maybe they will do it in exchange of some apps only exclusive to Android.. Apps such as Instagram.. Heard there is a new BB OS 10.1 that users of BB10 can upgrade to. With that 10.1, you can now make use of Skype.. So I feel there is something they will gain by sharing the BBM.. Let us wait and see.

    1. Hi Shepe master, BIS is actually cheaper than the data plan on android & iOS phones. BIS offers u 1,400 bucks for 1GB of data (airtel ng), but will offer u 200MB (less than 1/4 of 1GB) at 1,000 bucks. 500MB at 2,000 bucks, & 1GB at 3,000 bucks. The 200MB plan might last a month for an average user (who does light browsing, only chat, facebook & twitter), but for heavy users who watch youtube videos, & maybe download p̶o̶r̶n̶ songs & videos once in a while, 200MB won't go anywhere.

  23. Emeh hi, I'm a tech person. Many people are migrating from BB to android, iOS & WhatsApp; Blackberry has recognised this fact, so they want to keep their most important feature (the BBM) alive & competitive. This should've been a good move if it was done about 3/4 yrs ago, when WhatsApp & other alternatives weren't strong in the market. But I guess they thought then that BBM would serve as a hook to get new users onto BlackBerry’s platform. Little did they know it would backfire.

A messaging app is only as good as its user base. Now BBM has about 60million users, WhatsApp has over 200million users, iOS over 500million users, & android also has hundreds of millions of users. Blackberry has also gone further to announce 'BBM Channels', which
sounds a lot like the company’s version of Twitter. The new service will let users follow the brands and celebrities they’re interested in to receive updates and create their own channels that other users can follow.

What Blackberry is trying to do now is to retain their diminishing customers by giving them the ability to communicate with the growing pool of non-BlackBerry users within their preferred messaging app & most important feature (the BBM); But I'm afraid it might end up offering those same customers just the incentive they need to jump ship to android & iOS.

Its a Bold move by blackberry (pun unintended), but at the same time, a desperate one that is too little too late.

Someone likened the move to a game of Chess:
You know you're losing, but you still make the moves (even though it looks futile) to protect your king. But it is pure defence: you aren’t bothering your opponent any more.
    Goodluck to 'em.

    2. I agree. It's a desperate move and its going to cost them so many customers like myself.

  24. Hmmmmn so we will still pay to use BBM on androids or iOS? No need then

  25. Thank you Sommie, i go just dey my BB. The devil you know is better than the angel u dont. Nice one

  26. It's funny that people still use BB in this age.

  27. Lool na only for naija una still dey carry BlackBerry form
If dem close their naija market, BlackBerry don go be that

    ReplyDelete
  28. If they do this, then I see every blackberry user portiing from BB to IOS and Android! As for me, I'd just drop my BB and face my Android. And for those complaining Android's data subscription is too expensive, "beta soup na money kill am"

  30. Android users are waiting.

  31. Too bad for BlackBerry but I would switch to android of it has BBM. That's the only reason I'm on BlackBerry anyway.

  32. I am waiting for summer to port sharp sharp. BB5, quelle horreur! Their battery, bad dream! My BB5 is still new. I bought it in France. It hangs like every 20 minutes. It blocks. I pull the battery out to do a hard resetting like 20 times a day. The phone does not even read a memory card anymore.

They should just quit doing phones. They don't know what a smartphone should be. They made Alicia Keys "ambassador" but the singer uses an Iphone.

    Ridiculous !!!

    1. Forgot to add that i use a paper to hold my battery in :)

I don't have a friend here in France who uses blackberry. It's either Iphone, Samsung, Nokia Lumina or Sony.

Canadians themselves don't use blackberry. If africans dump their bbs, they'll just close down.

      BB sucks !

  33. Lol! The answer is obvious. So as all of you migrate to Chinko Androids or IOS for the big boys, starting selling your used phones (good condition) on Roborebe.com. It may also interest you guys to know that Blackberry is releasing the Blackberry Q5 for emerging markets which is cheaper than the Q10 but has similar functions. Maybe they have a plan after all.
