Ajapa books to boost literacy through UNICEF.

In recent years, stakeholders in the Education space have grappled with the falling standards of literacy in the country and are seeking solutions that will stem the tide of this growing problem. Some cheery news is here with the recent introduction of Ajapa Learning Aids into the education sector. These unique books have caught the interest of the international agency UNICEF which recently acquired various titles for distribution to school children in schools accross Nigeria. According to Emeh Achanga.....

Brand Manager, Specialist Interface Ltd, distributors of Ajapaworld Learning Systems, "The titles being distributed by UNICEF will go a long way in boosting both child and adult literacy because of their unique linkage to Nigerian folklore and culture." She further explained that "The titles consist of reading and activity books based on a local folklore character AJAPA - the enigmatic tortoise, which are creatively put together to make learning fun. We will achieve greater success in increasing the literacy rate when the material is locally relevant and contains elements that sustain

interest in reading and learning."  Titles include: The Day Tortoise Broke His Shell; The Dog, The Tortoise and the Farmer's Yam; Ajapa's ABC.  Achanga is confident that through this partnership with UNICEF, literacy will receive a positive boost and calls on other organisations to embrace learning material which are African based, in order to ensure that learning is delivered within our social context and children are not overwhelmed by the surfeit of foreign material which dominates the learning space. The titles can be found in prominent bookshops. Enquiries can be made at info@ajapaworld.com. Further information is available at www.ajapaworld.com
